Get To Know Dr. Samuel Black
Gentle Endodontics’ Dr. Samuel Black is originally from Charleston, SC. Currently, he resides in Forest, VA with his wife Elena, an orthodontist, and their two children. His educational experiences include receiving a Bachelor of the Arts (BA) degree in Biology from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and a Master of Science (MS) degree in Molecular Biology from the University of South Carolina. He received his Doctorate in Dental Medicine (DMD) from the University of Kentucky Dental School, and both a Ph.D. in Oral Biology and a certificate of advanced graduate studies (CAGS) in Endodontics at the Boston University Goldman School of Dental Medicine.
Following his education, Dr. Black worked for two years as an Assistant Professor at the VCU School of Dentistry in Richmond, VA teaching pre-doctoral Biochemistry and clinical Endodontics.
What Is An Endodontist?

All endodontists are dentists, but not every dentist is an endodontist! According to the American Association of Endodontists, only 3% of dentists are endodontists. These dental specialists receive specialized training in endodontic procedures beyond dental school, and focus on the treatment of the dental pulp and the tissues surrounding the roots of teeth. The dental pulp is the soft tissue that contains nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue inside a tooth. As an endodontist, Dr. Samuel Black specializes in diagnosing and treating diseases and injuries that affect the dental pulp, such as root canals, cracked teeth and dental trauma.

Root Canal
Therapy
Root canal therapy is used to treat a tooth that has become infected or severely decayed. The procedure involves removing the infected or damaged tissue inside the tooth, and cleaning and sealing the root canals to prevent further infection. Dr. Samuel Black is an expert in treating tooth infection and decay, and understands that many patients may be nervous about dental surgery. He aims to provide them with the tools and resources they need to undergo their procedure.
Pediatric
Frenectomies
When the tissue that connects the tongue to the roof of the mouth is abnormally thick or tight, it is known as a tongue-tie. Similarly, if the frenulum connecting the lips to the gums is too thick, it is known as a lip-tie. Tongue-ties and lip-ties can cause a variety of short-term and long-term issues for infants and children, such as difficulty breastfeeding, speaking, swallowing and more. A pediatric frenectomy can improve the child’s overall health, wellness and confidence.
Adult
Frenectomies
While tongue-ties and lip-ties are most common in children, they can occur in adults, too. Adults with tongue-ties and lip-ties may have had these conditions since birth, or they developed later in life due to an injury. Regardless of when these conditions appear, they can lead to jaw pain, poor oral health, difficulty speaking and more. Similar to a pediatric frenectomy, an adult frenectomy can release abnormally thick frenulums to improve the range of motion and overall quality of life.

Dr. Black is wonderful! I was so nervous about having 2 root canals at the same time. He prescribed medication for my anxiety which helped so much. I felt no pain during the procedure and Dr. Black made me feel so comfortable and at ease. His assistant and receptionist were wonderful as well! Very kind and welcoming! best experience I have ever had with a dental procedure
It was wonderful seeing a team that worked together so well. Dr. Black was able to save my crown during the root canal and save me an additional $1400 expense that I would’ve had to put a new crown on the tooth. And the name Gentle Endodontics is so fitting. I actually fell asleep during the procedure. So to Dr. Black and his team, I just want to say thank you so much for the best experience I have ever had with a dental procedure.
